Capitaines des ténèbresCaptains of Darkness
This film is freely based on true events: a tragic, obscure story of French colonial history. In 1898, two young French officers, Paul Voulet and Julien Chanoine, set out to conquer Chad. But in Paris, their dreams are not in sync with priorities: the Dreyfus affair is on everyone’s minds and the army will grant them few troops. So, to survive, to deal with the resistance of African villages, the two captains kill, plunder and recruit by force. A bloodthirsty African madness which they turn into a dream of a “White Empire” in the heart of the dark continent, the heart of darkness, and which ends with the murder of the French colonel assigned to neutralize them. A few years later, when they open the grave of Paul Voulet, supposedly deceased, they find it empty. He has disappeared. What happened to him? What remains of the accursed Column of these two “Captains of Darkness”?
