Blancs de mémoire
Little more than 40 years after the wave of independence that swept across Black Africa, France seems to have turned away from its history with its former colonies. Apart from relations of State, this separation has been characterized by an indifference verging on amnesia. The shooting of Serge Moati’s telefilm Capitaines des ténèbres, based on a little-known, tragic episode of colonial conquest in 1899, in Senegal during the summer of 2004, allowed for this documentary to be made. The documentary records attitudes, utterances and modes of narration as it interweaves testimonies, interviews, fiction and making-of. Apart from the military expedition it dramatizes, it spurs our memory and interest for the colonial period, which continues to produce after-effects both in France and in Africa.
