Belonging
Jess Copplestone lives a tranquil life with her husband Jacob, who is carpenter and joiner and the most reliable craftsman in the area. They are twenty years married, and childless. A foster daughter, Nella, died tragically some years earlier and her loss still haunts the pair. Jess, a librarian by training and experience, has given up work to look after Jacob’s elderly family: his mother, May, who has discovered that old age is a licence to tell the truth whatever the consequences; his aunt, Brenda, who is sweet, an espouser of good causes, terminally ill and incontinent ; and their cousin, Nathan who is doddery and God-fearing – sort of Goddery, you might say. One day, without warning, Jacob leaves home. After a week of silence, he phones to announce that he is now living in Ludlow with his pregnant lover, Hazel, her two children and a spaniel. Jacob is convinced that Jess will be happy as long as she looks after his family. Both carry on with their daily lives, but in Jess’s case, living is not the easiest part.
