Bel-Ami
The story of a social climber in the Paris of the 1880s. It’s the Belle Époque. But the times are not good to everyone and certainly not to Georges Duroy, who leaves the army only to find himself penniless and on the street. He’s a fine-looking young man of 25, unscrupulous, amoral and ambitious. He knows no one in Paris. He champs at the bit, not knowing where to turn. But one evening, Duroy runs into Forestier, an old friend from the regiment in Algeria, editor of a financial gazette belonging to Walter, a fabulously wealthy banker and politician. Forestier is married to Madeleine who is the cousin of beautiful young Clotilde de Marelle. Walter is married to Virginie and has an 18-year-old daughter, Suzanne. Duroy, quickly nicknamed "Bel-Ami" by Laurine, Clotilde’s little girl, conquers all these women. First it’s Clotilde, then Madeleine, whom he marries when Forestier dies of pneumonia, then Virginie. And to crown his rise, he marries Suzanne. In the meantime, he becomes a clever and ruthless journalist. Bel-Ami exerts his power over women to establish his influence over men. He ends up rich and famous, a Member of Parliament and even minister. He is living proof that neither morals nor ethics can stand in the way of the man who wants to succeed.
