In the self-service restaurant of a seaside resort town, vacationers witness the heated and bitter argument of a troubled family. Their sensitive teenage daughter observes her mother's emotional displays and accidentally enters a strange world of incomprehensible joy on an island where the town ornithologist traps birds as well as "other species" … On the beach, the girl observes the erotic games of contented participants. She thinks she has found a formula for happiness and tries to share her discovery with her mother.
