Arlit, deuxième ParisArlit, the Second Paris
During the making of an earlier film, the filmmaker had been reunited with old Issa, who had once accompanied him to Arlit, in Niger, around the time he was moving to Europe. That was 17 years ago. The director decided to follow the old man on one last visit to Arlit to see his son and old friends. It is also our chance to discover this city located on the edge of the desert. A former El Dorado and the region’s hub in the 70s thanks to the COGEMA uranium operations, Arlit became a ghost town after the Taureg uprising and the impending departure of the French company. Today it is a transit point for illegal immigrants headed for Algeria.
