American Expansion
The need for expansion is deeply ingrained in the American psyche, says European filmmaker Herbert Krill. He travels to the desert metropolis of Las Vegas, with its phenomenal growth, where settlers can feel like pioneers even today. Others re-enact famous events like the Lewis & Clark Expedition, which opened up the West in the early 19th century; or visit museums and shrines to the emigrant trails of the 1840s. Yet others lumber in their oversize "Sports Utility Vehicles"; or simply become obese. Yet others dream to set foot on Mars, which one day could be the equivalent of the 19th century "frontier".
