Algérie, pauvre à milliards

Oil in Algeria: Who Reaps the Benefits?

Ten years of terrible warfare deeply scarred Algeria. No one, nothing was spared, except the oil and gas fields, representing 98% of the country’s export revenues. As a result, Algeria’s monetary reserves amounted to $18 billion in 2002. And at the same time, Algerian society is depressed: there is a major lack of jobs, housing and even water. How can this paradox be explained – such a potentially rich country with a population that lives so poorly? The film juxtaposes the comments of economic and political leaders, both those in power and those in the opposition, and the utterances of the people, who have no qualms about speaking their mind with malice and a fantastic sense of derision.
