Alberto Sordi
"When I saw Alberto Sordi for the last time, in Rome’s City Hall on the top of the Capitoline Hill overlooking the Forum, lying in state in a coffin, it occured to me that his entire life had been played out on a great stage. Rome itself was that stage, Sordi’s hometown, and then the stage ballooned to include all of Italy. I thought back to the frenetic early days, to the way he loved showing off when he was a child. His debut at 16, I remembered, in those curtain raisers before the main show ; and when he started dubbing Oliver Hardy and got his foot in the door in the movies, first as a walk-on, then in more and more important roles until he got his first lead."
