Afghanistan

March 2001. The Taliban dynamite the Buddhas of Baniyan. In a land ravaged by 30 years of war, what remains of the Afghan heritage today? August 2003. For the first time, a scientific and cultural mission sets out in search of this despoiled civilization. A high-risk mission, a unique adventure to inventory some of Afghanistan’s treasures. Archeologists, scientists and journalist, a total of ten cars and two motorcycles travel some 5,000 miles from Paris and Kabul by road, in the spirit of the Silk Road. Among the monuments visited: Herat, cradle of Afghan culture, the rarely explored Minaret of Djam, the Sacred lakes of Band-I-Amir and Bamiyan, the Valley of the Gods in which the famous Buddhas stood.
