A FerreirinhaThe Lady of the Port Wine
The story begins in 1853. One of the most powerful men of the kingdom, the Duke of Saldanha, wants his son to marry the 11-year old daughter of Antonia Ferreirinha, seeking a powerful economical alliance. After a failed kidnapping attempt of her daughter, Antonia flees to London, believing distance will put an end to the conflict. Three years after, she returns to Portugal and is confronted with the animosity and the debts of her son. A plague decimates all vines in the Douro region. Ferreirinha takes into her hands the disinfections and treatments of all the vines. Ruin is all around. She will fight to prevent hunger from dictating the rural’s worker’s fate. She will work relentlessly until her death, at 80. She is mourned by the entire Douro region’s people.
