Vieux croco, petit poussin
One could swear that it’s the film that gave the program its title: “Tout ça (ne nous rendra pas le Congo/All that (Won’t Get Us Back the Congo).” That much Jef can surely say, literally. Jef loves the Congo, the Congo and its satellites. In fact, Jef loves Africa, the way of life there, and the people. Most of all its women: sweet, not bothersome, they treat him like a king, serving him cold beer, ironing his suits, putting on his watch... And then, a minor detail, everyone knows that in our (former) colonies, for the same salary, you can have a life style that’s far more lavish than on the continent. Take any little leftist in Belgium and transplant him to Africa: no sooner than you can say, “Thank you, Bwana” than he’s swapped the class struggle for a few servant boys. It must be the climate. Too, someone like Jef, who’s spent all his life in this paradise, you can understand that, even with a pension, he’d go back to add a little something to the kitty, even in such hot spots like the Great Lakes. And then, that big sentimental fellow went and got all gooey over a pretty little black chick called Judith.
