Une autre guerre d'Algérie
2003: the year of Algeria. 40 years after the events, nothing has erased the memory of a bloody and shameful war filled with massacres, torture and treachery. Yet no one challenges the official version, that which makes the FLN the only opponent to the French colonials and the only liberation movement of Algeria. But there is another history of the FLN, another history of this war, it too filled with treachery, unseemly pressures and murder. No one talks about it, either in Algeria or in France; the victors of History back each other up, at the expense of truth. In order to reveal the true history of the independence, we have to go back to the roots of the first Algerian national liberation movement, founded by Messali Hadj, then follow the events of an usurpation of power and a ruthless struggle for influence among Algerians on French soil. The director, Djamel Zaoui, himself the son of a Messalian militant who had to flee his homeland and withdraw into bitter silence, conducts a painstaking investigation among historians and politicians of all camps in order to understand his own history and that of a war no one dares mention: the “other” Algerian war.
