Todesengel

Angel of Death

In 1999, Friedrich Engel, former SS and Genoa police chief, was sentenced to life imprisonment on 246 counts of murder. The trial took place in absentia. In March 2001, the filmmakers picked up his trace in Hamburg. The UN list of war criminals had attested to the fact that Engel was suspected of murder since the end of the war. A list that the German courts never really used. Nonetheless, the Allies had investigated Nazi atrocities in Italy and the filmmakers had come across documents about the massacres at Sant’Anna and Marzabotto. Using interviews with German prisoners of the period, the filmmakers identified some of the butchers who were still alive and tracked them down.
