Tiens-toi au Coran
He long bore the ordinary name of Jean-François Bastin. But for the past 30 years, he has been living under the wing of Mahomet and found his way. He wears a thick red beard, an elegant turban and calls himself Abdullah. And, as is often the case with converts, he is more Muslim than the Imam himself and must feel he has a mission, even as he tries to ride the communatarian wave. Otherwise how can one explain the fact that he founded the “Citizenship and Prosperity Party.” It is hard to tell whether this party is Islamist or Islamic or whether one would dare say, as these lines are being written on the eve of the Belgian legislative elections, if it represents more than the sum of its few militants. After all, what religion hasn’t produced a political branch? But if election results can gauge how suited a discourse is to the demands of a group, we will be curious to know whether the PCP is successful, although remaining fully aware that a possible good score for the PCP may not be any clearer than its platform.
