The Deal
It is 1983 and the Labour Party has suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Tories under Margaret Thatcher. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown are two newly elected MPs who soon strike up a friendship, drawn together by their youth, ambition and determination to modernise the Party. In the years that follow, their friendship deepens as their reputations begin to soar. Together they are referred to by the Press and colleagues as “the future” but there is an unspoken understanding between them that Gordon, the natural leader is the senior partner of the two. When in 1992 Neil Kinnock loses the election to John Major, Tony suggests to Gordon that he should stand for election as the new Party leader. Gordon, fiercely loyal to John Smith, dismisses Tony’s suggestion outright and refuses to entertain that suggestion that Tony might stand for the deputy leadership. In the months that follow Tony becomes Shadow Home Secretary and gains in stature and popularity. Gordon on the other hand, as the new Shadow Chancellor, develops a reputation for bullying his colleagues on spending promises. When John Smith dies suddenly in 1994, the two friends are faced with a situation they never imagined. The Labour Party needs a new leader. They are the front runners. And one will have to stand aside.
