Teatralni Roman
This film is the first adaptation of “Theatrical Novel,” by Mickail Bulgakov, today considered one the great writers of the 20th century. The novel describes the complex and tragic relations between Bulgakov and the Moscow Art Theater, directed by Konstantin Stanislavsky. The action is set in Moscow in the 20s and follows the travails of a young writer named Madsudov, who is trying to have his first play produced. The plot, which the author intended to be autobiographical, describes the censorship exercised by Stalin’s government on all artists who refused to use their work to promote the current political regime.
