Suzie Berton
When you’re 67 years old and you run a nice little hairdressing salon in a quiet city, it’s very unpleasant to be taken away by two policemen right in front of your customers. But when a policeman shows you the photo of the half-charred remains of a man and accuses you of having axed him to death before setting fire to the body, it’s enough to drive you insane. But then you don’t know Suzy Berton, an ambitious, iron-willed woman, who hasn’t had it easy. Hardened against unhappiness, she fights backs. Even if, and especially if all the facts seem to be against her. This Marco was the man she had met two summers ago in Arcachon, during a strange vacation in which, under an assumed name, she indulged in the fantasies she denies herself the rest of the year because of her business. Beyond her possible guilt appears the pathetic image of a woman vibrant with a naïve and desperate love for a younger man who humiliates her before betraying her.
