At the crossroad between the Eastern Mediterranean world, Africa and Arabia, this vast territory has always been open to multi-cultural influences and has seen powerful empires flourish. From the glorious Black Pharaohs which have dominated Egypt for over a century, to the Nubian kings who founded a powerful Christian empire in Byzantine times, before the country embraced Islam imported by the Arabian tradesman who settled in the region and intermingled with local African tribes. This rich history has forged the complex identity of a nation which has experienced the longest and most deadly civil war over the past 20 years.
