Sewing for Bread
In the summer of 2000, the owners of the Ramon dressing-making workshop in Mitzpeh Ramon announced their decision to close the enterprise. The 57 employees, all women, refused to accept what they considered a “death sentence.” Thus began an inspiring struggle to protect their only source of income. For five weeks, the laid-off staff holed up inside the plant with their children, refusing to leave their sewing machines and determined to hold out. They were surprised by the results they obtained when the workshop re-opened as an independent cooperative under their management. Overnight they had become the heroines of the Israeli working class.
