Romero, Tod eines BischofsRomero, Death of an Archbishop
His death came as no surprise. He himself expected it. Archbishop Oscar Romero had become too troublesome since having denounced the pillage of Salvador by the “14 families” as well as the terror perpetrated by the death squads. In his last homily at the cathedral of San Salvador, he urged the soldiers not to carry out orders. The commandment, “Thou shalt not kill,” which he evoked constantly, finally become his death sentence. His assassination signaled the start of one of the bloodiest civil wars in Central American history, a war that claimed 70,000 lives. “The people declared him a saint, but he was a bothersome saint,” said one of his entourage. He was the bête noir of the Vatican because of his political activism, as well as for the United States, which heavily supported the anti-communist military regime.
