Rom BaroThe Great Gipsy Leader
Rom Baro—“head of the community” in Rom—is the portrait of Ion Biddia, the leader of Romania’s 1.5 million gypsies. Most of them live in squalid camps on the outskirts of the big cities, or in the remote countryside, places where the authorities won’t dare set foot. The film takes us inside this world poised between poverty and opulence, humor and violence, sadness and joy. The sharp contrast between rich and poor gypsies often gives the fine promises of their leaders a hollow ring. Director Emil Busurca seeks to draw attention to the situation of the Rom, and the living conditions of an age-old ethnic group that we still try to ignore.
