Pote Mak Sonje: the Raboteau Trial
For decades in Haiti, the poorest nation in the northern hemisphere, criminals enjoyed total impunity. The putsch that overthrew the first democratically elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, claimed 5.000 lives. Until November 2000, no one was prosecuted for these crimes. Told by the victims of the Raboteau massacre, this film interweaves the testimonies of victims and highlights of the trial with more abstract, lyrical images, and analyzes the way in which a community mobilized against theoretically insurmountable obstacles. A long history of impunity, corruption, extreme poverty and illiteracy that climaxed in the Raboteau trial, during which the criminals were confronted with their victims.
