Shanghai is among the first group of cities in China to have entered the demographic state of an aging population. By the end of 2001, the number of senior citizens in Shanghai had exceeded 2.466 million, amounting to 18.58% of the total population, of which 980,000 were single. Statistics showed that over 20% of the senior singles had the will to seek a companion. When people enter old age, what bothers them most is loneliness. The protagonist of our story, Old Yang, is an ordinary single old chap. He has an open personality with a sense of humor, but suffers from extreme feelings of loneliness. Aiming at depicting Old Yang’s true life as a realistic reflection of our time, this documentary records Old Yang’s experiences in seeking a wife to spend the rest of his life with. It provides us insight into the senior citizens’ attitudes towards wedlock at old age, calling for more social care for their psychological and physiological needs.
