Naître à GroznyBorn in Grozny
Grozny, 2003. After nearly 10 years of warfare, and over 100,000 deaths. A city totally razed and occupied by the Russian Army since March 2000. A city whose male population continues to be diminished daily. In the past three years, thousands of Chechen men have vanished in Russian "cleanup" operations. In Grozny, giving birth has become an act of resistance. Chechnya has never seen so many newborn. The central maternity hospital is doing all it can to help rebuild the nation. A life and death battle to ensure the survival of the Chechen people. Raissa, the hospital head, has kept the facility going throughout the war. It's -20 degrees Celsius outside, and 10 degrees inside. The women pray for boys: "Everyday, they kill more of our men. So we've got to keep having as many babies as possible, and boys especially. It's a question of life or death."
