This is not a biographical documentary about Michel Foucault. Apart from his dates of birth and death and the publication of his main writings, we learn virtually nothing about the philosopher’s life. The film’s aim is different: to make the audience share in the experience of a man’s thinking. The principle here is to fashion a prism whose facets are made up of his utterances and writings. The main facets are excerpts from his “Madness and Civilization,” “Discipline and Punish,” “The Order of Things” and “The Care of the Self,” The secondary facets are fragments of lectures, seminars and interviews he gave at the Collège de France.
