Madame Butterfly, l'empreinte du papillon
During the imperial reign of the Meiji, a young geisha of 15, Cio-Cio-San, nicknamed Madam Butterly, vulnerable, childlike, deliciously naïve, is abandoned by Pinkerton, an American naval officer, after a mock marriage. It kills her. What made Puccini put her heroines through so much suffering and death? An psychological analysis of Cio-Cio-San, Pinkerton and the other characters shows how Puccini put into words and music his obsession about love and destruction. Using scenes from the opera, interviews with the performers and film archives in the U.S., Japan about Puccini in the early 20th century, we discover the composer’s dramatic universe.
