Los Surma : Los Guerreros del DongaThe Surma: The Donga Fighters
Few regions in the world can be described as real areas of primitive life. In southwest Ethiopia, near the Sudanese border, mountains and rivers have isolated one such region: the Omo. On the banks of Kibish river, the Omo's particular geographical situation has preserved the pure way of life of its different tribes. One tribe, the Surma, has fought since immemorial time against its neighbor tribes: the Mursi, the Nuer, the Anuak, the Kitchepo and, most of all, the Bume. These are wars to defend their territories, wars of survival: in poor seasons, they must resort to stealing from their neighbors, and this arouses permanent hostility between the tribes. One of the most spectacular celebrations in the whole African continent is the Donga: the Surma's most important ritual. The life of this tribe hinges on this celebration. Fighting in the Donga, Surma men prove their valor and acquire social prestige. The braver they prove to be, the more women they obtain. Moreover, the Donga helps them prepare for the eventuality of war against neighbor tribes.
