Born on 7 November 1917, on the day of the Russian Revolution, Lev Kerbel began to sculpt in stone and marble at an early age. After World War II, he became the official sculptor of the Soviet regime. He created the statue of Karl Marx standing in the center of Moscow and the statues of Lenin and other monuments in the USSR and in “sister” countries. He remained one of the artistic symbols of the Soviet regime until the fall of Communism. Now 86, Lev Kerbel tells his story…
