Les Petites Mariées d'Abyssinie
In a village on a high Ethiopian plateau, some 600 miles from Addis-Ababa, a young girl of 10 veiled in white prepares for his wedding. Silent and submissive, she is about to meet her future 22-year-old betrothed for the first time. Tonight, the young bride-to-be is to move in with her in-laws. Only Alganesh, who works for a local women's association, takes care to whisper to the future groom: "Try not to deflower her right away, she's still too young." Nearby, her eight-year-old girlfriend, Wubit, has already been married to a priest. There are plenty of tragedies in the region. One hears of a teenage girl dying in childbirth, or another girl being rejected after having developed a fistula. The luckier ones flee. They are often found working in bars in the capital as waitresses or prostitutes.
