Les PasseursThe Crossing
In the past decade, some 4,000 illegal immigrants, most of them Moroccan, have drowned while attempting to cross the Gibraltar Straits. Moved by the terrible fate of these men and women, two brothers, Martin and Angel Zamora, have offered their services as undertakers to the victims and their families. In addition to transportation, the Zamora brothers oversee the identification of bodies and notifying the next of kin. They help them with the legal formalities of repatriation, and assist with the funerals arrangements, sometimes in the most remote villages of Morocco. Through the process of their work, we gradually learn the story of one young man, who died on July 14, 2003, who risked everything to come and work in Europe.
