Les Neuf Lunes de BehringThe Nine Moons of Bering
Between two oceans, two continents, East and West. 66° latitude north, 169° longitude west. The edge of the world. The furthermost point of the Far East. On the edge of the polar circle, the Behring Straits mark the frontier between Asia and America. On the Russian side, this region of Siberia is called the Chukocha. The village of Ouelen, pop. 1000, most of them Chukche, is located at the northernmost point of the Straits. Here distractions are few: no bars, no restaurants. The weather conditions are favorable. For the villagers, there’s no time to lose. At this time of year, the Chukche don’t fish. They hunt walrus and with any luck...whales. On the boat, their work tools are harpoons, rifles and binoculars. They can wait for hours. Once the beast is spotted, the hard part begins...
