Les Enfants de Toxic-BayChildren of the Toxic-Bay
Shortly after the Gulf War, US troops left the military installations of the Subic Naval Bases in Olompago and Clark Air Force (in the northern Philippines) which they had occupied since 1947. Before their departure, they had dumped tons of toxic wastes into the sea and in the earth, which led to the contamination of thousands of locals and base employees. According to recent estimates, between 2500 and 3000 people are have been affected by this chemical pollution. Nature became a poison for the men, leading to an impressive rise in cancers, leukemia and other congenital malformations. Mercury, lead, asbestos, pesticides and uranium wastes contaminated water and environment. Princess Caroline (de Monaco) of Hanover, who is president of The Friends of Childhood (Amade), sounded the alarm in Europe.
