Les Contes d'Hoffmann
“The Tales of Hoffmann” is the last and unfinished opera based on three tales written by Hoffmann noticeable by its bitter view on life and love sketched in a fantastic and poetic atmosphere. In a tavern near an opera theatre performing Mozart’s ”Don Giovanni”, the poet Hoffmann, drunk, pictures his unapproachable women’s ideal by telling his friends three love affairs he had during his life, and that ended up unhappily each time due to the intervention of an evil character. In this new production of the Opera National de Paris, Hoffmann’s troubled passions are depicted wonderfully by the Canadian stage director Robert Carsen. This spectacular and imaginative scenography that re-creates the opera world into the opera itself, leads to strange splitting effects and amazing mirror reflections between dream and reality.
