Leros, 45 ansLeros, 45 years
For years, the psychiatric clinic build on the Greek island of Leros in 1958 suffered from a disastrous reputation concerning the living conditions of its patients. In 1989, an exposé published in the British paper The Observer led to the intervention of the European Community and brought about institutional reforms. Since 1990, the situation has changed significantly. This film looks at the past and present of this institution to understand how basic human rights were violated here. Using interviews and archival footage, it retraces the 45 year history of one of the world’s most famous psychiatric hospitals.
