Le Rêve de Pierre
To relate the history of the founding of St. Petersburg means illuminating the life and personality of Peter the Great, that giant of a man (6ft.5in. tall!), a man of exceptional intelligence and power, outsized in his positive traits of characters as in his failings. St. Petersburg is one of the reflections of his grandeur and madness. Behind this demiurge dream is the desire to distance himself from Moscow, the former capital, to break the power of the Orthodox Church, eradicate the oldest Russian traditions and thus open his country to the modern world. The film is shot on a boat during a cruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg. On board, two nameless individuals live and talk: they will lay out the Ariadne's thread through the labyrinth of this magical city to cast a light on its history.
