Le Génie du mal
On May 29, 2002, at the behest of the movement Homecoming, a Russian historical and literary society made up of former inmates of the Gulag, the first public performance of Alexander L. Lokshin's Requieum (1949) was given. This was the final reunion of survivors of the Gulag (the first had taken place in 1991). On that occasion, Shostakovich had declared, holding the score in his hands: "The man who composed this is among the greats. It's a work of genius." Yet Lokshin's music had never been performed. Suspected of being a KGB collaborator, then accused of being an informer, Alexander Lazarevich has been barred from the intellectual community. This film deals with his life and that of his son who fought for his recognition and rehabilitation. Lokshin never denounced anyone and yet, the evidence, the facts, the files are there. Constructed around the Requiem, the film interviews those who today ask this question - not who was behind the denunciations - but how such a complete fabrication could be so easily taken as the truth.
