Le Devoir de juger

Criminal justice in France is dispensed by popular juries and every citizen can be called up for jury duty. But a jury member is fascinating. We know nothing about what can be asked of him: he must respect the secrecy of the deliberations and the hearings are off-limits to the media. This film lifts the veil from this mystery. The filmmaker received special permission to follow the day-to-day proceedings in a court outside Paris. We enter the inner circle of these one-day judges, ordinary people who, in the name of their innermost convictions, are invested by chance with the power to decide the course of another person's life. This is a terrifying power and not everyone comes out of the experience unscathed.
