La Critique de cinéma sous l'Occupation
There have been a number of books and films dealing with the cinema under the German Occupation. They relate how actors, writers and producers behaved and analyze their films. The behavior of literary world during this period has also been studied. But there has been little to date on the film critic. This would involve going back to the nationalist mood of the 1930s, to the year 1933 to be exact, when a decree created quotas for foreign workers in order to protect French labor in the entertainment industry. Subsequently, in 1936, André Berthomieu, president of the Artisans du Film, an industry association grouping directors and technicians, published an article in a leading trade journal concerning refugee filmmakers in France and attacking "the abuses of a generous hospitality." He wasn't alone. To reveal a xenophobic, anti-Semitic and even racist state of mind, there's plenty to choose from. Jacques Feyder, Julien Duvivier, Marcel Carné, Marcel L'Herbier, Marc Allegret and others -- everyone pitched in his two cents' worth.
