La Course à la vanille
Jean Toudeur, logistics manager for a major vanilla export firm, works in the landlocked region of Mananara, one of the last territories in which the primitive tropical forests, which once covered a large part of Madagascar, still subsist. In July and August, the earthen streets of the city of Mananara are covered with pods of vanilla. The city hums with activity. This film, which follows an expedition commissioned by important American investors, deals with the workings of the spice trade. What are the relations between foreign investors, collectors and peasants? How do the inhabitants of these remote regions live?
