L'Homme qui n'était pas MaigretSimenon, the Man Who Was Not Maigret
When Simenon talks about himself, he keeps changing his story, dreaming upalternatives, covering his tracks. In order to discover the real Simenon, the man behind the prolific author, the godfather of the modern crime novel, we have to look beyond the masks he wore and the myths he spun and unearth the clues he buried in the pages of his fiction. One thing is certain, his life and his fiction are intertwined. He couldn't write without drawing on his own daily life, just as he couldn't live without writing to escape his demons. The ambivalence between the life he led and the lives he might have led is what sets him apart as a writer. The point of the documentary is, if not to explain, to make us feel the "Simenon Enigma ".
