Everything seemed to conspire against Mei-Chen, for her life, which had hardly begun, to come to a halt. Not only the hostile jungles of her homeland, Vietnam, but also the war raging in Diên Biên Phú. There was little hope that, fleeing the horror of combat and reprisals, Mei-Chen and her family would survive this harsh fate. With these experiences behind her, she today evokes the three men in her life, each closely associated with the history of her country. There was her father, a general with Giap, her stepfather, a French captain who saved her and her mother and brought them back to France, and François Chalais, the only major reporter to have filmed North Vietnam at war against the Americans. Supported by the unfailing love of a courageous and dignified mother, Mei-Chen speaks without false modesty about her unusual past.
