The stunning emergence of women in contemporary Iranian society has its negative aspects, too. If they make up more than 60% of the student body in higher education, their overriding supremacy has led several ayatollahs to demand parity to contain this over-representation. But women still suffer: persecuted by the regime, they also endure the heavy legacy of a patriarchal culture. Those belonging to the most deprived fringes of society suffer even more. But today, women are fighting back. More and more are getting back at their brutal husbands by murdering them. Now criminals, they are sentenced to death without appeal. For the first time, this film takes us into the women’s quarter of the infamous prison of Evin. Here, women have become the players of a great tragedy. They must be heard. As if to astonish us, they relate their fate as tragic heroines.
