L'Autre Iran - Imamzadeh Internet
In Tehran, the Imamzadeh Yahya, the mausoleum of the Hidden Imam — a Messiah to the Shiites — is a much visited shrine where all ask God to fulfill their wishes. The faithful, men and women separately, have been sending their messages here for more than a thousand years. Nearby, an Internet café has just opened; it welcomes more clients than the shrine. The country is prey to an epidemic: messages sent over the Internet. More than 2.5 million Iranians have an email address. Men and women, young and old, city and country dwellers, laymen and clergy, all are connected to the world and to each other. If the regime still tries to impose its taboos in public life, an incredible wind of liberty blows across the World Wide Web. An entire society uses all the ingenuity it has developed down through the centuries. Let’s not forget: Iran is the oldest of contemporary Middle Eastern cultures.
