Khachaturian
This documentary is based on the memoirs of Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978). Using rare archival footage from Russian archives in Moscow and Armenia and interviews with family members, this film deals with the life and music of one of the world's most popular composers. Khachaturian was President of the powerful Union of Soviet Composers, and as a communist party functionary wielded great influence over Russian music. However, he was also a comrade and personal friend to the dissident composers of the time - Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and others. This film is about a man who walked a fine line between being both a loyal party bureaucrat and an advocate of greater artistic freedom.
