In Terms of Eternity
A major figure of Soviet cinema whose name appeared above the title of more than 400 films, Semion Skolnikov was the three-time recipient of the Stalin Prize. While the Soviet propaganda machine distilled its ideology and mystified reality, his films likewise gave credence to the new reality invented and approved by the Soviet censors. Picking up prize upon prize for his “creative works", the director used similar methods to construct a legend around his own life. To the extent that it become increasingly difficult to tell the real from the bogus in his life. A portrait as much as a look at an era, the film also tries to determine if Skolnikov and others like him were victims or accessories to the rules imposed by the system. But doesn’t the cause for the collapse of the Soviet system lay in the quantity of lies it disseminated?
