Hawai'i, une langue revit !Hawai'i, an Identity Reborn!
Thirty years ago the Hawaiian was on the way out. Today, thousands of children are being educated in the language from kindergarten through high school. Captain Cook discovers the Hawaiian Islands in 1778. Missionaries arrive bringing the Bible and creating a written Hawaiian language. In 1893, the Queen is disposed by a group of Americans and English becomes the only official language. In 1898, Hawaii is annexed by the United States. In 1959, it becomes the 50th state of the Union. Only 200 native speakers of the Hawaiian language remain. Twenty years later, in 1979, after a long struggle, Hawaiian becomes again the official language of the state – in theory at least – with English. But native Hawaiian are still a minority in their own land. They are the poorest. Hawai'i is not a tourist paradise for everyone.
