Germaine
A third generation “pied noir” (Algerian-born French), Germaine Ripoll is one of the few French colonials in Algeria who refused to be repatriated in 1962. She made the difficult choice of staying. But her love for her native land, the land where her ancestors were buried, was stronger. Now 77, she still lives and works as a restaurateur on the bay of Arzew, one of the most beautiful areas of the Algerian coast, some 25 miles north of Oran. Germaine talks about her attachment to Algeria. She also reveals her battle with the Algerian authorities to obtain nationality in the country she never left. Through her appealing personality, we discover a little-known aspect of the history the “pied noir” community. A complex history, still filled with resentment, but which can also be a story of reconciliation.
