Freedom Now! : DJ Spooky & Matthew Shipp

When music is filmed live, why is it always from the audience’s viewpoint? If I’m not in the theater, what I want to see is just what I can’t see from the audience. Otherwise, it’s better to go to the concert. And what I can’t do is be on-stage behind the musicians, next to them. That’s the main option of this film. I put all my cameras on stage, they’re always hand-held and constantly in movement, looking for the magic bond that unites the musicians as they improvise. So what if we only see them from behind or the side! What’s surprising about this approach is that, in the end, the audience becomes very much present, since they form the background of many shots.
