After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Cuba lost its main supporter and protector. It was the beginning of what was called "the special period." Living conditions for most Cuban families worsened. In particular, they found themselves unable to live on their peso wages and rationing of provisions. The use of the American dollar spread. Other solutions had to be found, even illegal ones. At the same time, thanks to certain basic ideals of the revolution - medical care and education for all - the health and schooling of Cubans remained at a high level. This film meets with some Cubans. Though some manage to live legally, many more must leave the straight and narrow to make ends meet.
